I have held many wild animals in my hands and am always astounded at the strength of the life force and the exquisitely efficient ways in which they are put together. This little creature, a baby tree squirrel, demonstrates where we got the meaning of the term “squirrely”. Tiny as he is, he is almost impossible to hold on to. His gangly little limbs and sensitive grasping hands and feet with long fingers and toes are everywhere, and he can climb or twist out of anything. At four weeks he is already a lean, wiry and muscular athlete, grasping at his bottle with amazing intensity and focus. When we compare a large man to a petite woman, we don’t think of him as having more life force just because he is bigger. And so it is with this diminutive thing – size is no measure of his drive and will to live. He fell out of his nest as his tree was felled for a construction site, but he will have his chance at life.
